110 YEARS OF FINNISH ATHLETIC RUNNING INNOVATION:
THE KARHU STORY

We have never chased trends. We have always chased the finish line.

Karhu United Kingdom

Born in Helsinki. Built for champions. It was 1916. In a small workshop on a side street in Helsinki, we started with a simple belief: Finnish athletes deserved the best equipment in the world. We were called Ab Sportartiklar Oy back then, a modest name for what would become one of the most quietly influential running brands in history. Our first products were javelins, skis, and discuses crafted from locally sourced Finnish birch, a wood uniquely lightweight and flexible, with a natural spring to it. But we didn't stop there. Running spikes and other sporting goods became part of our range too.

At the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, the world got its first real look at what the company was doing. Finnish athletes swept all three medals in javelin using KARHU equipment, and the Flying Finns, a group of extraordinary Finnish long-distance runners, claimed five gold medals in track & field events wearing KARHU spikes. The bear had arrived on the world stage.

In 1924, we became the official Olympic Equipment Supplier. That same summer, Paavo Nurmi, perhaps the greatest middle-distance runner who ever lived, took five gold medals in track & field events in Paris. Over eight years, Nurmi would bring nine Olympic gold medals back to Finland, setting 22 official world records. He wasn't running in our shoes. He was flying in them.

Our relationship with the Olympics deepened over the following decades. Factory workers at our Helsinki facility became champions themselves. In 1932, KARHU employees Matti Jarvinen (javelin) and Lauri Lehtinen (5,000m) won gold at the Los Angeles Olympics. The pursuit of excellence wasn't just in our shoes. It was in our culture.

The Trampas: The off-track training shoe

By the early 1960s, we were listening carefully to our athletes. They had spikes for competition, but nothing for the long training runs in between. Nothing for the warm-ups, the cool-downs, the daily miles that build champions.

With the Trampas, KARHU pioneered a new category of footwear built specifically for training rather than racing on a track.

The Trampas broke entirely new ground. It featured a padded heel collar to protect the Achilles, genuine arch support, and a construction designed for road and trail rather than the track. These were innovations that simply didn’t exist in running footwear before us.

The Mestari 76: The world's first Air-Cushioned running shoe

In the early 1970s, we turned our attention to what happened beneath the foot on every single stride. Cushioning in running shoes was primitive. Hard. Unforgiving. We believed there was a better way.

In 1970, we began developing the world's first Air Cushion midsole system for running footwear. By 1976, we officially registered the KARHU Air Cushion patent, making us the first brand in the world to hold that distinction. The Champion became an instant global bestseller, selling over one million pairs worldwide.

That same year, we channelled everything we had learned into what became our most iconic silhouettes: The Mestari 76, Finnish for "champion". Launched as a trusted performance runner, it featured our patented Air Cushion midsole, delivering balanced cushioning and everyday comfort in a way the running world had never experienced before.  The Mestari 76 is still part of our collection today.

Fulcrum: Redefining how runners move forward

In the mid-1980s, while the rest of the industry was racing to fill their shoes with even bigger air bags, gel pockets, and cushioning systems, we were asking a different question: what if the shoe itself helped you move forward?

Most cushioning absorbs impact; it pushes energy upward. We wanted to redirect it forward.

Karhu United Kingdom

Working with the University of Jyväskylä, Finland's leading sports and fitness research institute, we developed what became our most defining innovation: Fulcrum technology. Launched in 1986, it was the result of years of rigorous research into the natural biomechanichs of runners.

The Fulcrum creates a pivot point in the midsole. It guides the foot efficiently through its gait cycle, using the body's natural energy to create a smooth, rolling ride forward, which we call the Rolling Effect. Less bouncing. More moving.

Every KARHU performance running shoe carries Fulcrum technology today. It is the mechanical expression of our founding belief: that the purpose of a running shoe is to help you move forward, not up and down.

Ortix: Built around the runner's foot

For decades, the running industry built its shoes on flat, generic lasts. Pull out the insole of almost any running shoe, and you'll find a completely flat base underneath, because flat is easier to mass-produce. The problem is that nobody has completely flat feet.

Karhu United Kingdom

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, following the success of Fulcrum, we developed the first iteration of Ortix, a system focused on creating tailored insoles for the consumer. By analysing the individual runner's foot, we could provide a personalised footbed that supported the arch properly, rather than leaving every runner to figure it out themselves with aftermarket solutions.

It was a fundamental shift in thinking: the fit should come from us, not from a trip to a specialist shop.

Karhu United Kingdom

Then, in 2018, that philosophy took a significant leap forward. With the launch of the Ikoni, Ortix evolved from tailored insoles into something broader, using data from over 100,000 real foot scans to shape the midsole geometry and upper volumes of the shoe itself. The personalisation was no longer just in the footbed. It was built into the entire architecture of the shoe.

Today, with data gathered from over 4 million runners' feet, every KARHU running shoe is shaped in regular, HiVo (wider volume), a custom-like fit, straight out of the box.

110 years of moving forward

We have been doing this for 110 years. We have outfitted Olympic champions. We have invented the training shoe. We were the first to put air cushioning in a running shoe. We engineered a new way to move forward. We built our shoes around the actual data of millions of runners' feet.

None of this happened by accident. It happened because we have always believed that the best running shoe is one built with serious intent, for serious runners, by people who genuinely love the sport. KARHU means bear. Bears don't chase. Bears move forward with conviction, with strength, and with purpose.

For 110 years, our mission has remained unchanged: helping runners move forward. Whether you're chasing a marathon PR, exploring forest trails, or heading out for your first 5K, every KARHU shoe is built on lessons learned across more than a century of running.
